Chinese Women

Help and Support for Chinese Women

Evergreen women's support group

This service is aimed at supporting Chinese women who feel isolated, or have low self-esteem, to overcome barriers to their development.

The domestic violence project for Chinese women started in 1995 when WAITS was commissioned to conduct a research into the needs of women in the ethnic minority communities including the Chinese.  As a result, a member of staff was appointed to reach out to Chinese women who are suffering from the effects of domestic violence, lack of support, and the language and cultural barriers.

We offer a specialised service to women from the Chinese Community providing advocacy and support around issues relating to family matters.  This service takes into account the unique cultural issues and barriers faced by Chinese women, and we also offers language support.  This confidential service has led to women from the Chinese Community break down barriers that prevent them from accessing services and information.

EVERGREEN Chinese Women's Support Group

Evergreen is a Support Group which started in 1999 organised and supported by WAITS.  Over the years, the group received personal development training to build up confidence, so that members are more able to take control of their own lives.  So far, they have achieved the following:

  • Started a Saturday School from 2001 with a homework class for their children, and a Chinese language and culture class to develop their sense of identity and self-worth.
  • Produced an interactive bi-lingual STOP, LOOK, GO!  CD-ROM in 2002 for young Chinese people to address issues of relationships and conflicts within the Chinese family structure. (For a copy of the CD, please contact the WAITS office)
  • Created an informative bi-lingual website www.stoplookgo-evergreen.org.uk in 2005 for people in the Chinese Community in UK who may be suffering the effects of domestic abuse as a source of support and information.  This project was funded by the Home Office and launched in July 2005.
