At WAITS, we believe that meaningful change must be informed by the lived experiences of the women we support. This March marked an important milestone in our ongoing research project, funded by the Barrow Cadbury Trust, and designed to better understand the barriers, needs, and aspirations of women accessing our services.

This research focuses on gathering qualitative and quantitative insights from women who have experienced domestic abuse, ensuring their voices directly inform service development and wider influencing work. By identifying patterns, gaps, and opportunities, we aim to strengthen our programmes and advocate for systemic change across the sector.

A key priority of this work is ensuring that engagement is trauma-informed, ethical, and empowering. Women have been supported to share their experiences in a safe and respectful environment, with their contributions recognised as critical expertise rather than anecdotal evidence.

The findings from this research will not be publicly published but will play a vital role in shaping WAITS’ internal strategy and influencing external stakeholders. In particular, insights will be shared with the SEEKERS Board and partner organisations to ensure that messaging, services, and policy recommendations are rooted in real experiences.

This work also strengthens our commitment to co-production, working alongside women, rather than making decisions on their behalf. By embedding lived experience at the centre of our approach, WAITS continues to challenge traditional service models and push for more responsive, inclusive systems.

As we move forward, this research will support our advocacy efforts, helping to ensure that women affected by domestic abuse are not only heard but actively shape the solutions designed to support them.
